The Guardian: After the overseas match between Barcelona and Huang Qian was cancelled, the overseas match between Milan and Como may be scrapped

According to the "Guardian" report, after Barcelona and Villarreal's La Liga overseas game was cancelled, Serie A's plan to host Milan and Como in Australia may be scrapped.

Serie A plans to host a match in Australia, but that plan could be scrapped like La Liga's attempt to move Barcelona's game against Villarreal to Miami. It is understood that there are serious doubts about the match between Milan and Como that was originally scheduled to be played in Perth in February.

This month, UEFA approved the two changes, but emphasized that this was based on special circumstances. Now, top brass at European football's governing body believe the possibility of Serie A breaking with precedent and playing matches 8,500 miles away from home countries is also diminishing.

Serie A still needs to obtain approval from the AFC, Australian Football Association and FIFA to finalize this highly controversial move. People familiar with the matter revealed that the AFC is facing huge external pressure not to approve this game. Two weeks ago, FIFA president Infantino called hosting league matches on other continents a "huge risk".

La Liga's decision to move the game to Miami was canceled by event promoter Relevent Sports the day before tickets went on sale. La Liga said it was due to "the current uncertainty in Spain." Protests by Spanish players over the weekend saw kick-offs in all top leagues held until the first 15 seconds of play, with Real Madrid's backlash further complicating the situation.

It is understood that Relevent held discussions with UEFA, FIFA and North American football's governing bodies before canceling the game. Talks with UEFA in recent days have been particularly important as Relevent secured global commercial rights to UEFA club competitions this year for the 2027-33 cycle. The parties ultimately agreed that given the huge controversy surrounding the Miami game, such a high-profile controversy would set the wrong tone for their partnership and that a postponement could cause Relevent to suffer financial losses.

Relevent is not involved in the Serie A competition, whose viability has come under increasing pressure, with Milan midfielder Rabiot recently calling it "crazy" and "ridiculous". Como issued a statement this month saying that broadening Serie A's horizons was vital to the league's own survival.

There is cautious optimism within European football's corridors of power that the prospect of domestic competitions being staged abroad may be postponed for some time to come. But La Liga president Tebas posted a long post on his FIFA has reportedly begun redrafting its rules for so-called international matches and is seeking legal advice on whether such matches can be banned outright.

According to existing rules, FIFA can only prevent international competitions if relevant procedures are not followed. The decision-making power lies with the relevant national associations and federations. FIFA hopes to update its regulations early next year.

The Premier League have also privately expressed their delight at the postponement, as they have strongly opposed moving league matches overseas, following criticism of Richard Scudamore's 2008 Round 39 proposal. The FA and other major European associations, notably the Bundesliga, are also opposed to the innovation and have made their views known to UEFA.
