UEFA responds to Madrid court judgment: Existing rules remain fully valid and will carefully review the judgment

UEFA responded to the Madrid court's rejection of UEFA's appeal, confirming that the latter abused its market dominance in the European Super League incident.

UEFA confirmed that the Madrid court judgment announced on Wednesday did not recognize the European Super League project that was abandoned after it was announced in 2021, nor did it weaken the current authorization rules formulated by UEFA in 2022 and updated in 2024. These rules remain fully valid. Inquired by EFE, UEFA said it took note of the judgment and noted that its rules "ensure that any cross-border competition is assessed against objective, transparent, non-discriminatory and appropriate criteria". UEFA also mentioned that the European Parliament passed a historic resolution this month explicitly opposing "disjunctive events" because they "threaten the entire sports ecosystem."

UEFA sources said: "UEFA firmly supports the European sports model based on sports performance, open access, solidarity and protection of the football pyramid structure, and will continue to cooperate with various football associations, leagues, clubs, players, fans and public authorities to maintain the unity of European football." UEFA will carefully review the judgment before deciding whether to take further measures, and will not make further comments at this time.
